Frequently Asked Questions
How is a golf handicap calculated?
Under the World Handicap System, your handicap index is calculated using your 8 best score differentials from your 20 most recent rounds. For fewer rounds, a scaled calculation applies. Each differential is calculated as (Score - Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating. The average of your best differentials is multiplied by 0.96 to determine your handicap index.
What are Course Rating and Slope Rating?
Course Rating represents the expected score of a scratch golfer (0 handicap) on a specific course, typically between 67-77 for 18 holes. Slope Rating measures the relative difficulty of a course for non-scratch golfers compared to scratch golfers. The standard Slope Rating is 113, with difficult courses higher (up to 155) and easier courses lower (down to 55).
How many rounds do I need to establish a handicap?
Under the World Handicap System, you need a minimum of 3 rounds (54 holes) to establish an initial handicap index. However, your handicap becomes more accurate as you add more rounds. As you enter more scores, the system will use more of your better differentials in the calculation, up to 8 of your best from your last 20 rounds.
