Frequently Asked Questions

What is GFR?

Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is a measure of how well your kidneys filter waste from your blood. It's the best overall indicator of kidney function and helps diagnose and monitor chronic kidney disease (CKD).

How is eGFR calculated?

Estimated GFR (eGFR) is calculated using equations that consider serum creatinine levels along with factors like age, gender, and ethnicity. This calculator uses the CKD-EPI equation from 2021, which is currently recommended by clinical guidelines.

What do GFR results mean?

GFR values are measured in mL/min/1.73m². Generally, GFR ≥90 is normal, 60-89 is mildly reduced, 30-59 is moderately reduced, 15-29 is severely reduced, and <15 indicates kidney failure. However, interpretation should always be done by a healthcare professional.

Why is ethnicity a factor in GFR calculations?

Historically, different coefficients were used for Black individuals due to observed population differences in average muscle mass and creatinine generation. Some newer equations reduce or eliminate this adjustment as our understanding evolves.
